Proper healthcare is undeniably one of the most important aspects to people living today. Healthcare in this country is a topic of controversy and criticism and has been an on-going battle for many years. As flawed as the system may be at the moment, it plays an enormous role to people of all ages and backgrounds.

To provide effective and responsible medical care is a huge responsibility for those that carry out the medical services. I view medical providers as compassionate and goodwilling people who oftentimes go beyond the call of duty to relieve the pain of another person. The patient instills a lot of trust in those who are there to treat him/her and it is the patient’s right to expect to be treated with dignity and to feel better leaving the facility than when they first came in.

For most people, the hospital is a very uncomfortable setting, and I believe it is imperative for hospital workers to not only effectively treat patients but also to set their minds at ease as much as possible. This is sometimes made difficult due to hospital overcrowding, but it is not an impossible task. Treating people with simple respect and recognizing that they are fellow humans in need of care will reduce their nervousness and lessen the uncomfortability of being hospitalized. Proper medical attention is primary in importance, but there is also no substitute for treating patients humanely, not as obstacles to get through.

I believe it is very rewarding to help people relieve their physical pain and I’m genuinely interested in a profession that would involve that. I want a career that would challenge me, offer unlimited opportunities and allow me to work with people. I’m very interested in Physical Therapy; I volunteered at a PT’s office and enjoyed it immensely. Physical Therapy is a profession that is growing in importance and expanding its scope of practice. It is a viable career, it’s rather stable and there will always be jobs available in the future. It is also a very humane occupation; it involves dealing with people on a personal level to relieve their physical troubles.

Henry was born in 1491 and grew up in a strong catholic family, he went to mass every day. Henry only started to question the catholic faith when he wanted to divorce his first wife, Catherine Of Aragon.

In the sixteenth centery everybody was happy with the catholic church and faith, but this all changed in the 1500’s. People began to critiscise the cathoic church. They protested against the following. The church was too weathly and used all it’s money in the wrong ways. The fact that the parish priests were never at their parishes. They had other jobs ad forgot about their parishes. All the services and the bible were in latain. Having to pay indulgences to forgive your sins. A group formed called the Lollards who protested against all of these factors.

Whilst this was happening Henry married Catherine Of Aragon and she gave him 1 daughter, Mary, also know as Bloody Mary. In 1519 a man called Martin Luther (1483-1546) who was a german monk, attacked the catholic church. He was esspecialy angry about the indulgences (paying to have your sins forgiven). Many peope joined him and they all formed a group called the Protestants. Henry did not like these people who were critiscising his faith, so he wrote a book defending the catholic church. He was given a title: ‘Defender Of The Faith’. Which can be found on old pennies.

In 1525 Henry decided he wanted another wife. Catherine was older than him and had already given him a daughter and was a little too old to have another child. Henry wanted a son, and he fell in love with Anne Boylen. He asked The Pope for a divorce but The Pope refused point blank. Then Anne became pregnant with his child.

During this time Henry was finding lots of things he didn’t like about the catholic church and in 1532 Henry stopped the payments from the church to The Pope. It was in 1533 when Henry got the Archbishop Of Cantubury to pronounce Henry and Anne man and wife. Henry decided he wanted to make his own church. In 1534 the acts of Supermacy made the King the head of the church instead of The Pope. 1536 was when the smaler monastries of the country closed down and then in 1539 the larger ones disolved as well. From 1536 to 1539 Henry executed any monk who dared to argue with him.

Overall I think Henry liked a bit of both faiths. He only started the Protestant church to divorce his wife but he got more and more into it as time went by. I think Henry beleived in the catholic beliefs but didn’t like the strings that were attached to being a catholic.

The “Banking” concept of education, an analysis of Education in our society by Paulo Freire, is very simple. Teachers teach to their pupils as though they were receptacles which were to be filled. Things which are to be taught are taught as solid, two-dimensional things. For example, a student of economics might learn what the term ‘Laissez-Faire’ means. However, they would not be taught why or how ‘Laissez-Faire’ affects the economy, or any information regarding how ‘Laissez-Faire’ could be used. Students are rewarded for being able to spit back facts and information to teachers without actually fully understanding what it is they are saying. Freire states that students are given no room for creativity, or extra understanding. They are simply to digest the facts given.

In the essay, Freire suggests that students are not given any motivation or drive to seek new knowledge. When a pupil goes out of his way to seek out information on the formation of the universe because something his teacher said peaked his interest, the teacher is doing something right. This not only creates a better form of education, but a deeper connection between the student and the pupil, which Freire states is necessary. The banking concept creates a large gap between the student and teacher, where it is not necessary for the student to come together at all. The teacher proposes no challenges to the student in which he needs to think, or become active in the topic. By lecturing students, a teacher is not really doing his job, or any job at all. A student could gain the same information from any other number of ways. It has been stated many times before, but a teacher can also learn from a student. There is absolutely no room for this to happen in the banking concept. When a student learns that a teacher doesn’t in fact ‘know everything’, they might feel much more compelled to ask questions, and their inhibitions might be lowered.

Genuine thinking on the student’s part does not occur in the banking concept. When a student just needs to take in factual information, there is no need for any real analyzing of information or thinking. Freire states that this system of education must be completely discarded to make way for a completely new form of education. An educational system in which “concepts and practices under analysis come into conflict” as Freire puts it. A system in which students can question the knowledge they seek, and where they can fully understand everything they learn. This form of education would cause students to have the need to solve or work on problems. There would be need for a student’s creative power to come out, and an even greater need for a connection between the teacher and the student. Students would no longer be satellites which information is simply relayed to, but living beings which have to actually understand the information.

This assignment has made me realize that my formal education began in elementary school. Elementary school was an important foundation for my future intellectual experiences. In elementary school I learned the basics such as reading, writing, and simple math. These skills are all crucial to my success in life. Not only was a basic education important, but also the teachers and faculty that I met, who influenced my social development.

George Orwell expressed a feeling of alienation in “Such, Such Were the Joys”. He cast himself as a misfit unable to understand his teachers or his fellow peers. My upbringing was so different from his. I never felt like a misfit and I had a wonderful relationship with my teachers and fellow peers. His attitude and the way he was treated made him uncertain of where he fits in society. I was always made aware of my purpose in this world. I was raised in the Catholic Church so I was taught to know that God had a place for everyone in this world.

Orwell felt alone, I never did. Even though his home was full of love and nurturing, being at Crossgates destroyed all that. All my memories of childhood were filled with love, kindness, happiness, and nurturing. Orwell was made to believe that he was not handsome enough, not strong enough but yet he was good enough to be a “scholarship boy” who can attract prospective students. How can anyone subject a child to this kind of mistreatment? To make a child believe that he or she is not good enough to be part of their society is just cruel. Children are the most precious beings on this earth. They learn by example.

My experience in regards to education was the interest and compassion that my teachers showed me. Through my elementary school years, through my high school years and even my two years at ITT Technical Institute, all my formal education has been a crucial part of who I am today. Not only has school settings played a meaningful part of my learning experience but every job I have ever had has taught me a great deal. My very first job, at the age of 15, was caring for an elderly woman; she was the mother of the priest at my church. Even though it was just for a few hours a few days a week, I learned the importance of being responsible and how much one human being’s influence can teach you. I learned a valuable lesson that year and I still learn by helping others.

Sim and Bingo did not nurture nor raise those boys to manhood. They gave them a sense of insecurity. They only cherished the rich boys, the boys who came from wealth. These two adults did not aid Orwell in any way. This only added to his misery as a young child. They did not teach him as I was taught by the elderly woman I cared for. They made Orwell believe that bed-wetting was a sin and that he in turn was a sinner. Not once did they realize that maybe this was a sign of his misery. I can’t even comprehend what it was like to deal with this type of psychological upbringing.

Even Orwell admits that not all his days at Crossgates were unhappy. He actually had a really good relationship with Mr. Brown, the second master. Through all his misery he was still able to find some happiness because of the nourishing relationship with Mr. Brown. I personally cannot relate to the type of misery that Orwell endured but I can relate to the nourishing relationship one individual can bring to your life. Mr. Brown did exactly that, he fostered him by taking him on some type of expedition in the summer time. For my opinion this was a lesson in empathy, it gave Orwell a chance to know that someone at Crossgates did care.

Mr. Brown was teaching young Orwell the meaning of a happy life during his schooldays. If even for a small period of time, Orwell’s formal educational experience was changed to a happy one. Children learn in a stable, happy environment not in the type of environment Orwell had to be in. The way children are taught today is more productive, more encouraging and makes the child want to succeed.

I attended ITT Technical Institute from June 2001 through June 2003, graduating with highest honors and obtaining an A.A.S. in Computer Network Systems. This was the greatest challenge in my formal educational experience but my most rewarding. I worked full-time while going to school 3 times a week. I had to sacrifice the lives of my children in order to make my dream a reality. Although, I had a great childhood, education beyond high school was never enforced in my household so I didn’t have the drive to go on. I chose to have a family in place of my education. This sacrifice was worth it for all of us. It taught my children and me the importance of education.

My experience at ITT was somewhat good. Learning about Information Technology and learning how quickly technology changes was an absolutely fascinating experience. Each instructor had his or her way of making someone learn. Others did not. I had to deal with the stress of not having books or computer lab available when they were supposed to be.

As a parent, you learn and teach something different everyday. I try and teach my children about the good and bad in the world, about right from wrong, about being kind to others, about real versus unreal, and proper health and nutrition. Without proper health and nutrition or lack of sleep, children can’t possibly be learning to their full potential. Each day I learn a valuable lesson from my children, through an experience they may have had at school or on their way home. No matter how old we get, we will always keep learning or at least we should always keep learning and teaching.

I learn best by doing. I’m a hands-on type of learner. I can sit in a theory class for hours and not learn anything. My mind tends to drift elsewhere when I’m put in this type of setting. But if I’m working on something while the instructor is lecturing, everything that is being said is sinking in. This is because I need to visualize what I’m being taught.

I’m currently a Business Analyst at Thomson BETA Systems. I have learned a tremendous amount from this role. I not only learn the rules of correct writing each and every day, which by the way is not a strength of mine, but I also have learned to be more of a critical thinker. I deal directly with our programming staff so this is critical to my survival as a business analyst. For every enhancement that is requested, I need to analyze every aspect of it along with providing the business needs. Why would one way of doing things be more logical than another? My current learning environment is more analytical thinking and I needed to be more technically inclined. This overall is the reason why I needed a degree in Information Technology.

I have had opportunities to learn in a classroom setting through our Educational Development department at work. These are classes dealing with work related topics but have been very beneficial in my learning process. Every class has a different instructor teaching it so I get a chance to learn from the different teaching skills. Not only does the instructors lecture but also you get a chance to work on things hands-on. Again, for me this is the best way for me to learn.

Overall, I would say that my formal educational experiences have been pleasant. The more I learn, the more confident I feel about myself and the more I can offer my children and my employer. Knowledge is the key to success so each waking day I thank God for giving me another chance to learn something new.

The film Skylark is a wonderful continuation of the previous movie Sarah, Plain and Tall. The events take place in 1912 and are an accurate portrayal of history.

The story revolves around the Witting family who face new challenges of a drought and the possibility of fire looming over their farm. With these threats, the bonds of love and commitment between the family members (Sarah, Jacob, Anna, and Caleb) are tested. Cast members include Glenn Close as Sarah, Christopher Walker as Jacob, Lexi Randall as Anna, and Christopher Bell as Caleb. While Joseph Sargent and Glenn Jordan directed the film, David Shire served as the composer, Michael Brown as the editor, Mike Fash as director of photography, and Joseph Sargent again as the movie’s producer. Skylark is the second movie of a trilogy with Sarah, Plain and Tall and Winter’s End preceding and following it.

The story is based upon a novel written by Patricia MacLachlan who originally did not believe in sequels but then realized the characters of Sarah, Plain and Tall should be explored and expanded. With the second movie, many people, both in front and behind the camera, returned from the first. The cast stayed in a town called Emporia which was twenty five miles from the farm in which they filmed the movie. This farm which served as the location of production, was a real 240 acre Kansas farm owned by John and Ada Bryan. During the two-year time gap between the first and second movie, the owners of the farm decided to modernize their kitchen by replacing their wood stove and ice box refrigerator with state of the art appliances, new cupboards, sinks, and countertops. This presented a problem since many of the scenes in Skylark take place within the kitchen. In order to solve this dilemma, a construction crew worked round clock for four days replacing the 1992 kitchen with an 80-year-earlier Kansas farm house kitchen. After the film was completed, the kitchen was put back to its 1992 version. The director of the film realized that parts of the script involved things which directors are taught to avoid. These included films which were weather-dependent, a long way from civilization, and films in which featured child actors and those involving animals. All of these were dealt with in Skylark. Ironically, Skylark called for drought conditions in the wettest summer in Kansas history. Also, the set location was an hour from the first town, two leading roles were under the age of ten, and since the location was set on a farm, animals were required in its making. Although these are usually avoided, the producers of Skylark successfully took them head on. A part of the movie which actually happened was the barn burning scene. It was no Hollywood trick since an actual barn on a real farm in Osage Country, Kansas was set ablaze. Volunteer fire departments from Osage Country gathered while the scene was being filmed for safety. In return, the owners of the old farm were built a new one which was 100 years newer. Because of Glenn Close’s amazing performance in the movie, she was honored with an Emmy nomination. The broadcast of this three hour and eighteen minute movie in 1992 was the second highest rated movie of the decade exceeded only by the original Sarah, Plain and Tall.

The movie begins with Jacob, Sarah, Anna, and Caleb Witting having a family picture taken of them on their farm porch. On the way inside, Caleb writes “Sara” in the sand which represents the love Caleb wants Sarah to have for the prairie land. As the family is making their way into the house, it is revealed that Sarah’s cat Seal is going to have kittens. The next morning, the family returns from church and helps a cow give birth to its new calf which is named Moonbeam. Drought conditions are apparent when the dry crops and low water are shown in the film. The family receives letters from Sarah’s aunts discussing their green lands and cool waters which all the family members long to have. Caleb puts a glass symbolizing hope upon a wood post to measure the rain when it comes. The following day, the family goes into town for various reasons. When they return to their farm, they discover a fire which they rush to put out. Jacob firmly states that fires must be watched for both day and night. In the next scene, Sarah discusses her desire for a baby with her best friend Maggie. Later, because their well is so low, the Wittings make a trip to the river to gather water; however, when they arrive at its banks, they discover the river has dried up completely. Sarah confesses her hatred for the dry and barren land.

One day later, Sarah becomes hysterical when Jacob fires a gun at a coyote drinking out of their water supply. This hysteria is caused by the lack of water which Sarah is drinking. Sarah receives a birthday party where all her friends attend and dance to music. Anna wrote Sarah a book as her gift to her and in it she calls Sarah, mother. The neighbors tell the Wittings that they are leaving for a while since their well is dry. That night, a fire burns down their entire barn and Jacob tells Sarah that she and the children must leave. With this demand, Sarah, Anna, and Caleb take a train to Maine to stay with Sarah’s aunts. The aunts are called “the unclaimed treasures” with their silk dresses and no shoes. Sarah meets her brother William and his wife Meg for the first time in two years and is happy that her original family is reuniting. Back at the farm, Jacob comes close to selling Moonbeam; however, he realizes that the cow is almost like a family member and ends up keeping the calf. Letters are written between Jacob and Sarah, Anna, and Caleb. It rains in Maine and because neither the children nor Sarah have seen it in such a long time, they all play in the downpour. Jacob is shown rebuilding the barn with other men in their area and he looks depressed and lonely. William and Sarah reminisce about their childhood and how their father use to call Sarah his little Skylark. Then, to Jacob’s relief, it rains in Kansas. The family in Maine celebrates the town’s two hundredth birthday by watching fire works and having a picnic. Caleb reveals that he misses his father very much. The following day Jacob comes to Maine as a great surprise to everyone. All are content and Sarah tells Jacob that she is pregnant. The family comes home to a new barn and new kittens. Sarah then takes a stick and writes her name in the sand since she realizes she loves the land and the people who live on it.

One aspect of the movie which parallels with the time period of the story is the clothes that the actors in the film wear. They are a perfect portrayal of the clothes worn in the early 1900’s. The women wear dresses of plain colors with high neck lines and three quarter length sleeves accessorized with hats, bonnets, gloves, and fancy umbrellas. Also, they wore long, high-waisted skirts with long sleeve button up tops accompanied by belts or sashes in between the two. Aprons were also used when women were doing house work or other farm chores. Closed toed heeled shoes covered their feet, and their hair was usually loosely pined up. On the other hand, the men wore collared long sleeve button up shirts with vests, ties, and bow ties. Overalls and suspenders with buttoned plaid shirts also dressed the males during the 1910s. On special occasions, suits in tan and gray dressed up the men and matching hats provided the finishing touch to looking sharp. The attire present in the early twentieth century matches the costumes used in Skylark.

The scene in which the family goes into town provides an extremely well portrayed picture of the time period. Buildings which appear in the scene also appeared eighty years ago in the same manor. Buildings present in the town were labeled Saloon, Dry Goods and Clothing, Hats, Hays, Noises, Meat Market, General Store/ Post Office, and Southern Hotel. The train station and Church were other buildings on the set of Skylark. Also, a blacksmith is there where Sarah asks if her bridle bit is ready. Horse and buggy are used as transportation but one automobile is also seen, showing that some people did in fact have them during the time. The buildings in the movie are the same buildings which would have appeared in earlier history. The producer did an accurate job accounting for the correct layout and design of a prarie town.

The final aspect of the film which proves to be historically accurate is the transfer of letters between the family members. This film displays this correctly since in 1912, most people’s form of communicating with their loved ones over long distances was in the form of a hand written letters. The children tell their father how much they miss him as he responds with his love and updates of the farm and rain. Sarah and her brother and aunts also write letters since it is the only way for them to keep in touch. The fact that the post office is used to communicate in the movie proves that the film is parallel with history in the area of letter writing.

I believe this movie accurately portrays the history of living on the prairie in 1912. All aspects are in parallel with the time period in which the movie takes place. It is a well written film and I highly recommend it for those who enjoy a wholesome and honest picture.
